Working Fantasmic! and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party

I'm past the halfway point of my program and to jazz things up a little I managed to move my shifts around in order to try working at some new places!

First I went to Fantasmic!, the nighttime show spectacular at Hollywood Studios. They have food where guests first enter and it was my job to fill the orders. The menu is simple so it wasn't too hard, but very different from my job at Roaring Fork! For one I wasn't actually making anything, just grabbing the food from warmers and pouring drinks. I had fun though and it was a quick rush! We rarely get a crowd at the Lodge so it was interesting to see how busy locations run things.

 
 

Then just this past Tuesday I worked at Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party! This is the special nighttime event held at Magic Kingdom on select nights in November and December. There's cookies, hot chocolate, and other festive drinks all around the park as well as special character meetings, an exclusive parade, and Christmas show in front of the castle.

Since the party requires a separate ticket, I joined the group of cast members who stand behind the turnstiles and hand out the wristbands that distinguish the party-goers from the regular Magic Kingdom attendees. It was a lot of fun putting on a cute Christmas costume and spreading holiday cheer! And I wasn't in charge of a single plate of food- what a relief. 

I'm glad I got the chance to work new places- it's nice to get out from the Wilderness Lodge once and awhile!

Two Weeks of Quick Service Training

My first two weeks on the job have come to an end, and so has my training! This past Sunday I officially became a Disney Cast Member at Roaring Fork.

While I'm keeping my "earning my ears" ribbon on my name tag until I feel more confident in a few positions, I'm so excited to be moving out of the training stage and into the actual job stage. There will be higher expectations and more work, but I'm ready to see what I can do working for Mickey.

Disney World training starts out the same for everyone: Traditions. Traditions is the very first day of paid work where you learn all about the Walt Disney Company and what it means to work at Walt Disney World. Lots of fun surprises are sprinkled among videos and slideshows about being a cast member. I even won a pin for correctly answering a trivia question! Traditions is a lot of fun, and once it's over you can drive straight over to the Magic Kingdom to make use of your self-admission pass. What better way to celebrate?

Training starts to vary from there, but lots of CPs find themselves in Welcome to Operations next. We learn about all the roles that make the parks and resorts run each and every day, as well as important things to remember in order to be successful. They have a fun way of presenting otherwise unexciting information, so I didn't think this was too bad! I also know now that Disney takes safety more seriously than any other company/business/institution I've ever encountered before.

The last "class" training I had was "Welcome to Food and Beverage." They try to make us all more excited about getting quick service, which I really appreciate. There are moments now where I wonder how frying chicken nuggets is magical, and I still think back to some of the tips said in this class. At the end we got our free non-slip shoes, aka the most uncomfortable pair of sneakers you could possibly wear for 8+ hours at a time. I highly recommend buying nice insoles to replace the foam (yes, that's right, foam) versions that come with the shoes.

After that, I went off to Wilderness Lodge and never looked back! All new employees of the resort got a general overview of the Lodge one day. It is an absolutely beautiful resort, even with all the construction. It was fun to get to know people working in other roles, too.

Finally I made my way to the Roaring Fork with the three other new CPs. After a day of general overview training and working in the dining room, I slowly made my way through every role: Dining Room, Food Court, Waffle/Salad, Expo (nugget/fry cooker and plates orders), Order Taker, and Food Runner. It's a lot of hard work, and incredibly overwhelming at the beginning. But I think I'm catching on, and the more I do it the better I should get.

Today is my first official day of work, so wish me luck!

Monday I officially moved to Disney World and find myself just one day away from becoming a cast member!

The updates I could give you could go on for hours, so, for now, I'm just going to talk about the Disney events I attended the past two days. More exciting adventures to follow (preview: Magic Kingdom, fireworks, a flooded kitchen).

Monday I drove into my new apartment complex, Chatham Square. All my roommates were placed together (yay!) but in a small, two bedroom six-person apartment (sad). Still, we adjusted pretty quickly until the crisis started (but that's another story...). Check in went so quickly and before I knew it I had a housing ID and a bed! We show that ID everywhere, so if you're doing the DCP, never forget it!

My roommates are wonderful and moving in went smoothly. I later explored Disney Springs with one roommate, Maggie, and one of her friends and her roommates. It was a good first night and I was really looking forward to finding out my job the next day.

Enter Tuesday: Casting! It's mostly paperwork but I waited (im)patiently for my job in the big atrium where Disney statues loomed large over us. So I will be in Quick Service Food and Beverage at the Wilderness Lodge in Roaring Fork! (So hit me up if you're around :)). I'm very excited, I love that resort and it's near Magic Kingdom without the crazy hours. I also got my schedule and come Friday afternoon I will be an official cast member. I have Saturday off which means- PARK TIME. Then Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday I have brief training days before getting a more complete schedule.

After casting I came back to explore the apartment complex a bit more with Jenny and Emily and then our roommate adventures entered unanticipated territory.
