Time to Deck the Halls!

Time to Deck the Halls! | Scribbling in the Margins blogOh you know, just checking in to make sure you haven't forgotten about me :) Now that December has finally come, I'm in all-out Christmas mode. My little desk corner is filled with holiday clings, Merry Christmas banners, and my mini tree. There's nothing some decorations can't fix, if you ask me. One of my roommates also decorated our door with Santa wrapping paper and stockings for the four of us.

I love Advent.

The lead up to Christmas is just as wonderful as the actual day. I love my daily Advent readings, Christmas songs, and the anticipation of a new beginning. Another semester comes to a close, the weather settles into it's winter state, and everyone gathers together to celebrate. I've always found something magical in holiday spirit, and I refuse to let that go as I grow up.

While I haven't been blogging much this semester, I want to record my favorite time of the year. So get ready for... the 12 Days of Blogmas! I will be posting 12 days in a row starting December 14th. They might be festive photos, an account of what I did that day, a book review, a gift list--anything Christmas related! If you have any requests, leave them in the comments below.

I hope you are all having merry holiday seasons! I'll see you on the 14th :)

A Love Letter to Letters

A Love Letter to Letters | Scribbling in the Margins blog Here's a little known fact about me:

I LOVE to write letters.

Thank you notes, life updates scribbling on pages of stationary, simple "thinking of you" sentiments--I love them all. There's something about pen to paper, the etching of one element onto another, that's incredibly personal and intimate to me. It takes time and thought to write a letter, time and thought that allows you to consider the person you're writing to and what they mean to you--even if it's as seemingly impersonal as a thank you for a job interview.

I also love stamps. The USPS offers countless types of stamps- American flags, farmers markets, birds, historical events, Harry Potter, famous people, nativity scenes- that show the personality of the person. They allow you to show who you are, what you like, in the tiniest of ways. Individuality the size of a postage stamp. "Forever," they read. Because mail will never die away.

Arguably my favorite feature of a letter is the stationary. While I love a good Hallmark card, it's the plain, everyday, set-of-10 stationary that captures my heart. My trip to Italy this past January was not complete until I visited a paper store. My favorite aisle in Target is the one lined with boxes of flowers, anchors, thanks yous, and stripes, all tantalizing me as I walk by. When I pull out a fresh card to send to a friend or family member, I gently run my fingers over the soft inside before I begin. The beauty in letter writing isn't always in the words; it's in the presentation.

Pens (never pencils) are important to a good letter experience; yet the element I neglect the most. In my brief moment of free time when I can etch out a note, the closest pen is typically the one chosen. Yet two years ago, when I sat down with my box of 50 thank you cards and a list of graduation presents, it was my fountain pen I chose. The elegant, ink flowing pen stoked each card with gratitude and cursive. An experience; not a chore.

They say the post office is losing money. They say the art of letter writing is dying. They say our world needs immediate gratification, and letters just won't cut it. Yet I check my college mailbox every day, hoping for a note. Ready to respond with a crisp blue card of my own. Because the thoughts that take time to come are often the thoughts worth saying.

  • I had an AMAZING fall break at Disney World with my family. We had so much fun riding Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and exploring the parks. A great place to spend time with my dear family.
  • On that note...three weeks until Thanksgiving Break!
  • Indiana had its first snow this past Friday. I can't believe we're at that point in the year when snow enters the weather forecasts. I can't say I'm excited, but there's nothing like white snow in December (about the only month I appreciate it).

On Location | Happiest Place on Earth"The symbol of the Magic Kingdom, the symbol of Disney World itself, Cinderella's Castle is my favorite part of the park. My first peek was set under a rainbow sunset, melting a silky blue sky to orange watercolors folding towards the west. The light invited me inside, to a plaque placed at the entrance to the park  inviting all who entered to 'leave today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow, and fantasy.' I was more than willing to accept the invitation."

Let's Talk About Books | Guest Post!

Let's Talk About Books | Scribbling in the Margins blogThis week let's give a big welcome to my friend Amanda! She is an avid book reader (110 books read so far this year!) and aspires to be a future librarian. A sophomore in college, she is thinking about majoring in Spanish and minoring in Math and Educational Studies.

Hello everyone!!  I’m Amanda, substitute Leeann for this week :) Leeann has crazy amounts of work to do for school, so I’m filling in for her.

So let’s talk about books.  I love ‘em.  Books can take you to other worlds.  They can help you walk in the footsteps of people you would normally know nothing about.  They show you that you’re not alone – that other people feel and think the same way you do.  That is why I love reading.  Reading connects you to the world.Let's Talk About Books | Scribbling in the Margins blog

As Leeann mentioned, I think I want to be a school librarian when I grow up.  As a college sophomore, my future is both a long time from now and closer than it seems.  My love of reading stems from two main people – my mom and my school librarian.  My mom is a librarian and shared with me a love of reading from an early age.  She and my dad both read aloud to me and my siblings when we were little, showing us how reading holds the key to other worlds.

I hung out at her library all the time and still do.  It’s almost like my second home, and a good majority of the people who work there have known me since I was baby. One lady, Claire, shares a birthday with me. I remember sneaking up on her at the reference desk whenever we visited the library.  She, or someone else in my mom’s department, would then give me a piece of Hershey’s chocolate.  Fun fact: It has gotten to the point where whenever I eat a piece of plain chocolate I think of the library.  Chocolate + books = great memories.

In addition, I went to the same school from kindergarten to 8th grade and had the same librarian.  Sister Elizabeth always had book recommendations for me along with new and exciting bookmarks.  I kinda have a bookmark collection…I’m up to over 700 now…yeah, don’t judge.  Anyway, she was the main person who influenced what books I read and we shared our thoughts and opinions with each other. We still do to this day, mainly on Goodreads – only the best social media site out there.  Part of the fun of reading is being able to share books with other people and learn from what they think about them.  It’s such an amazing feeling when you find someone who loves a book just as much as you do.

That is why I want to become a librarian.  I want to share this with other people.  Some people aren't “readers."  They say they don’t like it, it takes too long, books are boring, blah, blah, blah.  Crazy people! The way to turn someone into a reader is to start them at an early age with books tailored to their interests. Books are one of the best inventions in the world!  So right now that’s my goal for if/when I become a school librarian.

On another note about reading, I started keeping a journal of all the books I read starting in 2009, when I was a freshman in high school, along with marking them on Goodreads.  As of right now, I’m about halfway through filling the journal up.  I write down the title, author, dates I read the book, and stars out of 5.  It’s really cool to see how my handwriting changes throughout the years and what books I read and loved.  It’s like taking a trip down memory lane, bringing to light where I was when I read something and what was happening in my life at the time.  Now, 6 years later, I am so glad I started this journal.  It’s documentation of my love of reading.

So what do you guys love about reading?  How do you keep track of what you've read and what you thought about it?

Thanks for having me write a guest blog, Leeann!
